WORLD PREMIERE DANCE EVENT – James Brown: Get On The Good Foot – A celebration in Dance

To a global community of devotees and admirers, the inimitable James Brown is The Godfather of Soul. Now the Apollo Theater brings you the world premiere of Get On The Good Foot, an evening-long, celebration in dance of the genius of James Brown. The virtuosic, no-holds-barred Philadanco, dubbed “one of America’s top troupes” by Dance Magazine, performs new works to a feel-good medley of James Brown hits, choreographed by a who’s who of global dance masters.

The Feast of Saint Francis and Blessing of the Animals

A day inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, whose life exemplified harmony between humans and nature, begins with a performance of the Earth Mass/Missa Gaia by artist-in-residence Paul Winter and his Consort as well as the resident Omega and Forces of Nature Dance troupes. The celebrant at the service will be The Rt. Rev. Mark S. Sisk, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of New York. The Very Rev. Dr. James A. Kowalski, Cathedral Dean, will preach. An outdoor fair, open to all, where Cathedral clergy will bless pets will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Harlem performing arts institution, The Faison Firehouse has joined with SummerStage to present an evening showcasing the diversity and depth of today’s dance landscape. The programme features troupes such as Forces of Nature Dance Theatre, which meld contemporary dance, traditional West African dance, ballet, house, Hip-Hop and martial arts together; Camille A. Brown & Dancers, famed for its high theatricality, gutsy moves and virtuosic musicality; Illstyle & Peace Productions, a multicultural dance company that creates works rooted in Hip-Hop blended with an eclectic mix of performance disciplines including tap, DJing and beat boxing and OPUS Dance Theatre whose works present visual and emotional images of the human experience.

Kwanzaa Celebration – Regeneration Night

The Apollo Theater celebrates Kwanzaa with the renowned and energetic New York-based dance company, Abdel Salaam’s Forces of Nature Dance Theatre, in an evening of dance and music honoring the principles of Kwanzaa – family, community and culture. Performers include Craig Harris and the Tailgaters Tale, Michael Wimberly, Yacuba Sissoko and members of the Harlem Children’s Zone/Forces of Nature’s Youth Academy. Hosted by WBLS personality Imhotep Gary Byrd.

Kwanzaa Celebration

In collaboration with the Central Park Conservancy, the Museum for African Art presents a celebration of Kwanzaa as part of the Harlem Meet Social Hour. Join the Museum and Abdel Salaam, the founder and Artistic Director of Forces of Nature Dance Theater Company, as we learn about and celebrate the tradition of Kwanzaa. Forces of Nature will share the meaning and inspiration behind each of the seven principles (the Nguzo Saba) of Kwanzaa as they are used throughout the year by African descendants worldwide.
